December 14: Day 14
I am blessed by the kindness of others.
Many years ago, when my boys were three and five years old, our church offered a wonderful gift to all parents. We were encouraged to leave our children at the church for the entire afternoon - a total of four hours. We were to use that time any way we wanted to - we could Christmas shop, wrap gifts, bake, NAP, or just lie on the couch and soak in the glory of a peaceful and quiet home.
I remember this afternoon so vividly. I kissed my boys goodbye and high tailed it out of there. I had a well-organized list {surprised??} of errands to run and things to do. I accomplished so very much and the best part? I was happy the entire time. Wow, the grocery store without two rambunctious kids. Target by myself - the luxury of trying on clothes or leisurely going through the clearance racks. Home, where I cranked my stereo, ate ice cream from the carton and read every single section of the Sunday paper with zero interruptions.
When it was time to pick up the boys, I was excited to see them. They had spent the day with teenagers {thrilling for my boys} and played games, made ornaments and had snacks. They were as giddy as I was. It's been thirteen years {!!!} since then and I have said a prayer of thanks for that opportunity numerous times. I'm sure I wrote a note of thanks to the pastor for allowing parents that break from the daily grind.
I am blessed.
